Victorian illustration to download showing the disastrous fire at St Anne’s Church, Limehouse, 1850. A large crowd watches the flames bursting out of the windows and roof. In the foreground firemen are bringing up a hose. The fire broke out in the roof just after the stoves were lit in the morning. It was later discovered that the end of one of the roof beams entered the flue. St Anne’s, built in 1727, was designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor. After the fire it was restored 1851-54 (and again in 1983-93 and 2007-09).
