Victorian illustration to download showing people relaxing, eating and drinking outside an inn, the Belle Vue, Gravesend, a favourite holiday and day trip destination for Londoners in the Victorian era – this scene was drawn in 1871. Men and women sit at tables or stroll around; in the foreground two little girls play with a toy horse and cart. Couples dance to the music of a hurdy-gurdy man. Beside the inn is an old windmill; stairs lead to viewing platforms. The inn was once the miller’s house, and the mill became an observatory with a camera obscura. The mill was pulled down in 1894, and the inn burnt down during the Mafeking Night celebrations in 1900.
