Collision of two paddle steamers

Victorian illustration to download showing a collision between two paddle steamers. Passengers on the sinking ship struggle towards ships that have come to their rescue. In July 1852 the Duchess of Kent was run down by the Ravensbourne in the River Thames off Northfleet Point. The Duchess of Kent immediately began to sink. The Ravensbourne and another paddle steamer, the Meteor, came alongside, and rescued the endangered passengers. One infirm man fell in the water, but kept himself afloat until he was rescued.
