Victorian illustration to download showing a dramatic battle scene during the Crimean War, the battle of Citate on 5 January 1854. Soldiers advance along a village street, assailed by heavy fire – two soldiers fall. In the background is a church. This battle early in the Crimean War resulted in a defeat for the Russians. They were advancing across the Danube and had fortified the village of Citate [Romania]. The Ottoman forces made a surprise attack, driving the Russians back behind a church, from which they were forced to retreat. Total casualties were about 6000 Russians and 1000 Turks. This victory left the Ottoman army in control of its Danube frontier.
