Crimean War: gun battery, siege of Sebastopol

Victorian illustration to download showing a gun battery at the siege of Sebastopol (October 1854-September 1855) – this scene was sketched in March 1855. An officer orders a troop of soldiers, bayonets fixed to their rifles, to their places at the parapet. This is constructed with gabions (wicker cylinders filled with earth) topped by sandbags; at intervals thick abutments guard against enfilading fire from the enemy. Cannons on gun carriages stand at the parapet. Some soldiers rest against the parapet, wrapped in greatcoats against the cold. On the ground are empty gunpowder cases and boxes which contained shells.
