Getting news from the post office

Victorian illustration to download showing people outside a post office reading a newspaper and letters that they have just fetched. A group of men avidly read the newspaper. A young mother, a letter at her feet, sits weeping with her arm round her son, who has a toy drum and wears a soldier’s cap – is her husband a soldier, and has she heard that he is wounded or dead? Another young woman reads a letter to her old parents. This illustration was engraved from the painting ‘The Post-Office’ by Frederick Goodall RA (1822-1904).
