Victorian illustration to download showing soldiers raising a 25-ton gun into position on top of a gun battery using sheers (bipod lifting mechanism with a block and tackle) and two capstans, each operated by a team of 40 men. This is the battery at Fort Gilkicker, Gosport, opposite Portsmouth, built between 1863 and 1871, which guarded Portsmouth Harbour and commanded the anchorage at Spithead and the entrance to Southampton Water. Built in an arc shape, it had 22 casemates and embrasures on top for 5 heavier guns. Today it is a Grade II* Listed Building.
