Victorian illustration to download showing a picture of a quayside where two policemen have found an abandoned baby; one of them carries it, wrapped in a blanket. A woman with her barefoot daughter, an old woman and an old man, and a dock worker look on. In the background the mother of the baby, compelled by poverty to abandon it, holds her head in her hands in grief and distress. This is a somewhat altered version of the wood engraving ‘The Foundling’ by Frank Holl which appeared in The Graphic in 1873. Frank Holl (1845-88) was an accomplished painter who specialised in social realism; he was also a portraitist.
