Victorian illustration to download showing a group of smugglers on a clifftop taking a rest and eating and drinking on their way back from the sea. They eat bread and slice a pie; two men have broached a barrel (of brandy?), and all are enjoying their picnic. Two horses and a donkey also rest, the barrels they have been carrying lying on the ground. In the background the rest of the smugglers toil up the hill with horses carrying more barrels. This illustration was engraved from a painting, ‘Halt – Smugglers’ by Henry Perlee Parker (1795-1873), exhibited at the National Institution in 1851.
