Street riot

Victorian illustration to download showing an angry rioting crowd trying to attack a man in a horse-drawn cab and being held back by policemen. The shouting mob shake their fists and try to surround the cab, while policemen (wearing top hats) beat them back with truncheons. One policeman sits on top of the cab. This incident took place in 1851, when a man was accused of ‘frightful cruelty’ to a servant girl. His committal for trial ‘gave rise to a burst of popular vengeance’.
