Victorian illustration to download showing an orphan boy begging a cottager family to take him into their home. Two children beseech their grandmother to allow him to stay. Their mother, her baby on her knee, and a toddler at her shoulder, looks pityingly at him. This is a poor family – the cottage furnishings are shabby and basic, and they have few possessions. A hen and chick peck on the cottage floor, where the boy’s small bundle lies. This illustration is an engraving of ‘The Mitherless Bairn’, by the Scottish painter Thomas Faed (1826-1900). This painting caused a sensation when it was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1855, and is possibly Faed’s most celebrated painting.
